Process Notes: Powder Handling

An article on the characterization of powder flow in solids handling processes was recently featured in Chemical Engineering. The article short on providing solutions to the typical problems encountered in transporting powders in a production plant environment. However, the article does an excellent job of presenting some of the issues that affect powder flow, and especially focuses on some of the analytical techniques that can be used to characterize powder flow under conditions similar to those found in production processes.

In particular, there is a good discussion of some of the changes that can occur to the powder characteristics as a material is transported, stored, and conveyed, as well as how these different process steps can be evaluated for their effects on the physical properties and flow characteristics.
